The 3rd edition of the Montreal AI Ethics Institute's The State of AI Ethics captures the most relevant developments in AI Ethics since October 2020. It aims to help anyone, from machine learning experts to human rights activists and policymakers, quickly digest and understand the field's ever-changing developments. Through research and article summaries, as well as expert commentary, this report distills the research and reporting surrounding various domains related to the ethics of AI, including: algorithmic injustice, discrimination, ethical AI, labor impacts, misinformation, privacy, risk and security, social media, and more. In addition, The State of AI Ethics includes exclusive content written by world-class AI Ethics experts from universities, research institutes, consulting firms, and governments. Unique to this report is "The Abuse and Misogynoir Playbook," written by Dr. Katlyn Tuner (Research Scientist, Space Enabled Research Group, MIT), Dr. Danielle Wood (Assistant Professor, Program in Media Arts and Sciences; Assistant Professor, Aeronautics and Astronautics; Lead, Space Enabled Research Group, MIT) and Dr. Catherine D'Ignazio (Assistant Professor, Urban Science and Planning; Director, Data + Feminism Lab, MIT). The piece (and accompanying infographic), is a deep-dive into the historical and systematic silencing, erasure, and revision of Black women's contributions to knowledge and scholarship in the United Stations, and globally. Exposing and countering this Playbook has become increasingly important following the firing of AI Ethics expert Dr. Timnit Gebru (and several of her supporters) at Google. This report should be used not only as a point of reference and insight on the latest thinking in the field of AI Ethics, but should also be used as a tool for introspection as we aim to foster a more nuanced conversation regarding the impacts of AI on the world.

AAI's Nineteenth National Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-04) filled the top floor of the San Jose Convention Center from July 25-29, 2004. The week's program was full of recent advances in many different AI research areas, as well as emerging applications for AI. Within the various topics discussed at the conference, a number of strategic domains emerged where AI is being harnessed, including counterterrorism, space exploration, robotics, the Web, health care, scientific research, education, and manufacturing. Counter-Terrorism / Crisis Management / Defense--For decades, the Department of Defense has been a major funding source for AI research. Since the tragedies of September 11, there has been a new urgency to develop and field AIbased systems to aid the intelligence, defense, and emergency response communities.

Over the last eight years, four workshops on machine learning have been held. Participation in these workshops was by invitation only. In response to the rapid growth in the number of researchers active in machine learning, it was decided that the fifth meeting should be a conference with open attendance and full review for presented papers. Thus, the first open conference on machine learning took place 12 to 14 June 1988 at The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Of the 150 papers submitted, 49 were accepted for publication in the conference proceedings (available from Morgan Kaufmann).


CARMEL Versus FLAKEY

CARMEL's software design is hierarchical in Object recognition is done using a single camera and a one-pass algorithm to detect horizontally striped, bar-code-like tags on each of the 10 objects. A distance and a heading for each object are returned. Recalibrating the robot's position is done by triangulating from three objects with known locations. FLAKEY's basic software design is distributed: Articles On the perception side, modules add raw sonar and structured-light information to LPS, treating it as an occupancy grid. Other interpretive processes use this information to construct and maintain higher-order structures, parsing the data into surface segments, recognizing objects, and so on.


Automated Intelligent Pilots for Combat Flight Simulation

TACAIR-SOAR flew all U.S. fixed-wing aircraft. The general goal was to generate behavior that "looks human" when viewed by a training audience participating in operational military exercises. Its most dramatic use was in the Synthetic Theater of War 1997 (STOW '97), held 29-31 October 1997 (Ceranowicz, 1998; Laird, Jones, and Nielsen 1998; Laird et al. 1998). STOW '97 was a United States Department of Defense (DoD) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) that was integrated with the United Endeavor 98-1 (UE 98-1) training exercise. As an ACTD, the overall goal of STOW '97 was to permit an early and inexpensive evaluation of advanced technologies that show promise for improving military effectiveness.
